A RAY METHOD FOR CALCULATING WAVE FIELDS REFLECTED FROM TRANSITION LAYERS

Yu. V. Roslov and T. V. Yanovskaya

Abstract

Reflection and transmission of seismic waves at weak discontinuities is examined using the ray theory incorporating the first higher term in the ray series. This approach has been used to compute wave fields reflected from a transition layer between two uniform half-spaces. The results were compared with computations according to the Thomson-Haskell method, where the transition layer is represented by a sequence of uniform layers. Conclusions have been drawn as to the applicability of our approach.
