A TECHNIQUE FOR JOINT DETERMINATION OF LATERAL VELOCITY VARIATIONS AND AZIMUTHAL ANISOTROPY FOR SURFACE WAVES

Abstract

The approach developed earlier for solving a two-dimensional tomography problem is extended to joint estimation of lateral velocity variations and azimuthal anisotropy. The solution satisfies an a priory assumption about the smoothness of unknown functions. Numerical examples demonstrate the method's efficiency. The method was applied for the estimation of azimuthal anisotropy of Rayleigh wave velocities in southeastern Europe. Strong azimuthal anisotropy was found in the solution. However, analysis of resolution indicated that the anisotropy resulted from lateral heterogeneity.
